  • Press Release Feb 3 2012

We are deeply saddened to announce that there has been an avalanche fatality on Meadow Mountain. This is the first avalanche related death in our 37 years of operation. Our thoughts and love are with the victim’s friends and family.

  • Meadow Creek, B.C., is not exactly a place you might stumble upon by accident. Located at the north end of Kootenay Lake, the little hamlet consists of afew houses, a bar, a garage and just a few hardy souls who call it home. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a compelling reason to go. In fact every winter, Meadow Creek draws visitors from the far corners of the world — and it’s all for one reason alone.

  • Selkirk Wilderness was the first snowcat skiing operation anywhere. In tenure chosen by a ski-loving geologist’s discerning eye, Allan Drury founded Selkirk Wilderness around Meadow Mountain, located a meandering 45-minute drive along Kootenay Lake north of Kaslo, BC. Hidden deep in the mountains…

  • It was a trip we will be talking about for years to come. Everything seemed to come together just perfectly: the snow started Sunday afternoon bringing 30cms of fresh fluff, the sun poked out each morning, the crew we skied with were an incredible amount of fun, and the food and beverages topped off the trip just right!

  • “I’m perched above a perfect pillow line as the photographer digs into position. Be- hind, the guide smiles knowingly. If I pin it straight I can air over the second pillow, he says, to the steep – albeit completely blind - landing below. The snow is deep. Real deep.”

  • “From here sweeps Shangri-La, the paradise known as Selkirk Wilderness Skiing, the seminal backcountry cat operation in the world, founded on a vision and a leap in 1975 by Allan and his wife, Brenda, who built it on desire, imagination, grit – and bountiful heaps of fluff. A thousand skiers have sampled ...”

  • “As the week wore on, I found myself leaving my journal in my bag. I would sit instead by the fire in the common room and watch the ski guides, lodge staff, and long time “clients” (friends) stand arund the bar laughing and talking, and marvel at how there was so much love flowing between them, you could virtually see it in the air.”

  • “There was a cliff I hit in Meadow Creek, BC, a few years ago. It was a double flip, probably one of my biggest airs. It was like I had a Matrix moment. Everything slowed down.”

  • “Attention all advanced skiers — regardless of where you live, you must try
powder skiing while you’re young enough to thoroughly enjoy it. You’ll
be exposed to some of the most spectacular mountain scenery there is.”

  • “Herb Pinder, who has come every one of the 33 years Selkirk Wilderness has been in business, tells me between heavy gasps (mine) for post-run oxygen that he keeps coming back for the snow, food, people, fun and great terrain.”

  • “This is my first time here but for me the big difference is Allan, the owner,” says David, an investment banker in Minneapolis. “He’s full of passion and stories all night and then he’s up in the morning filling the granola bowl at breakfast. Inspiring.”
